Ernst Haeckel

Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919)

Ernst Haeckel was a marine biologist who promoted the work of Charles Darwin in his home country, Germany. He discovered thousands of new species, produced many publications, and received many honours including the prestigious Darwin-Wallace medal from the Linnean Society of London in 1908. In his book, Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature), from which the Box Fish wall hanging was taken, he attempted to demonstrate the beauty and symmetry of nature. In turn, the book inspired many artists, designers and architects in the early 20th century.
